If you have an heirloom chair, favourite couch, or recent antique "find", I specialize and take pride and joy in bringing old upholstered pieces back to life. I also do custom drapery, slipcovers, and cushions for both indoor and outdoor furniture.

If you have a specific piece in mind for a room or are adding to a collection but don't have time to scour antique stores for that special find, I have several furniture items for sale, ready to be reupholstered in the fabrics of your choice.

Bringing old upholstered pieces back to life

For your own pieces, you can bring me any fabric including leather or suede, or we can make that choice together from sample books. I can also make old wood look new again with light refinishing (French polish or wood revitalizing formulas), or contract out full wood refinishing and furniture repair services to my trusted network of local craftsmen.

Beautiful draperies for any room
I'm also happy to create beautiful draperies for any room in your home or business establishment from fabric of your choosing or material we choose together after a consultation.

Attention to detail and fine craftsmanship
As I hope you will see from the photo selections provided here, I provide a service that emphasizes attention to detail and fine craftsmanship. My training at Ryseron University's fashion program in the 80s is combined with more than 20 years of contract sewing, upholstery and drapery work. My home-based studio is equipped with industrial sewing machines and tools that allow me to accept any project large or small.

Please call for an appointment and estimate

Please call to discuss your upholstery or drapery project and receive an estimate. My workshop is located in the Almonte ward of Mississippi Mills, Ontario. It's a 10-minute drive from Carleton Place, a 20-minute drive from Kanata and a 35-minute drive to the City of Ottawa. Together we'll create a look you'll be proud of that will give you and your guests pleasure for many years to come.

Diary of an upholstery restoration: old chair finds a new home in Almonte bedroom

This is a typical restoration project. We started with a fine old chair from my own collection - a product of the F.E. Coombe Company Limited. Based in Kincardine, Ontario, the furniture made at the Coombe factory was known worldwide. It was used to furnish the Canadian Government House in England, the MPPs' chairs in Parliament, and the Queen's suite when she visited Canada. Talk about heritage!

OK, now let's talk about restoration. The upholstery on this chair came to me in good shape, but a frustrated family pet seemed to take a liking to one of the chair's arms, and so the chewed up woodwork had to be restored and refinished by one of my trusted craftsmen.

Once the woodwork was back in show shape, it was time for new upholstery. This chair was going to live in a bedroom, and its new owner decided on a neutral fabric that she brought to me. First, I installed new webbing, then retied the existing springs, which because of the chair's initial quality, were still in good shape. After that, the chair was ready for stuffing. The family pet had devoured some of the chair's arm stuffing, so that had to be replaced.

Next came new cotton felt on the arms and body of the chair, and then I covered the chair in the new material and added tacks, in keeping with the styling of the original piece. Lastly, I enlarged the cushion and added some feather down to keep its new owners comfy.

Twin Deco chair project for Pakenham antique dealer

An antique dealer came to me with these twin Deco armchairs. I loved the elegant lines and the detail in the woodwork, however the finishes were flaking off, the joints were loose, and so I sent them to a trusted supplier for reglueing and a complete refinishing.

The insides contained coil springs (in good shape) and rotted natural fiber (which I replaced). The dealer wanted a neutral fabric so I decided on a lovely oatmeal faux suede that offered both elegance and durability.Glenna Watts. 613-256-7165 for your next upholstery project.

Club chair now back home with an Almonte retiree

This club chair came into my shop in September 2006 and left later that month. The springs were in excellent shape despite the fact I found a date-stamp marked 1941. I recovered the chair with fabric chosen by the client. Glenna Watts. 613-256-7165 for your next upholstery project.

This channelback chair's seat needed to be completely rebuilt with new webbing, springs and stuffing. The owner brought her own fabric, a rich red crushed velvet with floral motif.

Wingback slipcover project for a Carleton Place home

  • Feb 9, 2007

This wingback was an ideal project for a slipcover. The chair was very old. The wood frame was getting soft and would not withstand the stapling and nailing required for another upholstery job, so a slipcover was the best option.
